OLHBI Information & Communication Technology

IT services is an ever-evolving field of service delivery that is used by everyone. OLHBI IT services uses the analogy below to help understand the relationship of all the IT services (infrastructure, security, desktop, clinical applications, etc.) to an individuals use in their day-to-day tasks.

IT services are like cars and trucks that drive on the roads and bridges which require regular and preventative maintenance. The drivers (users of IT) follow the laws and regulations of driving in order to not create accidents or create harm with their vehicles. And like all drivers, training is needed to teach  the laws and regulations required for proper and safe operations.

IT Infrastructure is like the highways and bridges and includes the core network and server infrastructure. As the traffic increases on the roads IT will widen or strengthen the roads (add more devices/servers, change wifi keys, run more cables, etc.) Everyone uses the roads, bridges, stop lights while they are driving.

IT applications that run on the highways are like the cars. Various makes and models of vehicles that have their own unique behaviour are very much like the applications we use (email, file systems, Office productivity software, database, EMR, finance software, etc.) IT makes sure that they are running as expected, designed as needed and meet the needs of the program. For example, If you are hauling construction materials you might use a truck instead of a car. IT makes sure that these considerations are included when developing or purchasing an IT system.

IT operations is where the regular and preventative maintenance occurs to ensure that the cars have their oil changes, the tires are rotated, or any minor repairs that may need to be scheduled, etc. Databases need indexing, office applications and antivirus definitions need to be updated, IT vendors need to be paid, supplies need to be ordered, etc.

OLHBI IT provides services to all OLHBI Programs and Services in each of these areas and continues to build the infrastructure, run the applications and provide operations for each user at OLHBI.

Infrastructure & Security

OLHBI IT uses industry standard hardware for every level of the IT environment with best of breed security systems including using AI, dark web monitoring and proactive email monitoring. OLHBI IT has networked 12 different facilities for a seamless user experience regardless of location. OLHBI IT operates in a hybrid environment using both on premises and cloud technologies to provide a robust and highly available user environment.

Clinical Information Systems

OLHBI IT manages all clinical systems whether hosted on premise or in the cloud and manages all the vendor relationship and support for each system. OLHBI supports electronic medical records systems, Digital Xray systems and many other smaller systems used for health care monitoring and support. Clinical systems have specific requirements for operations and security because they contain personal health information and have specific configurations required for health care technology implementations.

Helpdesk

OLHBI IT supports over 280 users in 13 program areas in 12 facilities and keeps the helpdesk busy in day to day operational support. OLHBI IT also manages several projects while providing hosting for OLFS and security services for OLCN. OLHBI IT has 4 staff and are looking to increase their capacity to keep up with the growing demand of IT services as OLHBI expands to serve the community better.
