The LPN will provide care to Detox Centre clients through a wide range of practice areas including acute care, addictions and mental health, health and wellness, and education. The LPN will observe, assess, monitor, and document patient symptoms, reactions, and progress. Administering medications and injections, assist nurse practitioners/physicians during procedures and provide education and information to patients, families, caregivers and staff. LPN’s work collaboratively with clients, families and the OLDC health care team to ensure continuity and quality of healthcare delivery.
Reports to: Program Manager
- Conducting initial intake, nursing assessment and triage level of required care by the responsible provider.
- Assessing patients daily for level of physical, emotional, and social stability.
- Demonstrate the ability to operate health equipment safely.Report and document incidents, adverse events and/or near misses according to practice setting guidelines and policies.
- Provides direct nursing care to patients with a variety of primary care needs including all health complexities with recognition of when it is appropriate to contact the NP/Physician.
- Assesses, monitors, recognizes clients’ needs for substance use withdrawal management ("detox"), post-acute withdrawal syndrome and familiar with treatments for sub-categories with substance use disorder(s).
- Provides quality patient care to patients on voluntary inpatient unit.
- Performs de-escalation and mental health crisis management.
- Administers medications, provides wound care, monitors patients for medication efficacy and symptom improvement.
- Responds to overdose emergencies or any other medical emergencies not limited to CRP/defibrillator use, stroke, seizure, heart attack.
- Assists RN with any procedures or processes while remaining inside the LPN scope of practice.
- Participates in controlled and regular medication administration and reconciliation.
- In collaboration with the Medical Manager orders and maintains ward stock supplies.
- Collaborates with contracted pharmacy as needed.
- Practical Nurse Diploma from a recognized post-secondary practical nurse program.
- Maintain a permanent, valid practice permit with the College of Saskatchewan Association of Licensed Practical Nurses. (SALPN).
- Must be willing to work full scope of practice (including IM/SC/ IV).
- Suboxone and Sublocade Course- to be completed ASAP after employment commences.
- First Aid & CPR, Injectable Naloxone and nasal naloxone up to date; Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Experience with CIWA-Ar, COWS, OAT therapies, detox, withdrawal, and basic recovery programming.
- Experience in an addiction centre preferred.
- Able to work 12-hour shifts to include weekends and nights.
